He led fighting patrols four nights in succession and under machine gun and rifle fire obtained valuable information of how enemy posts were held and their location. In the raid following he got his objective, entered a trench in rear, and attacked a post personally killing four of the enemy, and with his party bringing back prisoners. He displayed fine courage and leadership, and obtained an identification which was urgently required.
